We started on the
first day of COVID.
March 13, 2020. The world shut down and Don't Be Boring Agency opened for business. Not because the timing was great. It was the right idea at the wrong moment, and sometimes that's exactly when you have to go.
The idea that changes everything.
Boring brands don't happen by accident. They happen when a business stops acting like a person.
Think about the brands you love. They have opinions. They say things others in their industry won't say. They have a point of view you recognize, a voice you'd know anywhere. They feel like someone made them — because someone did.
Now think about the ones that disappear. Generic headlines. Stock photos. Mission statements nobody reads. Those brands don't have a marketing problem. They have a personality problem. Somewhere, someone decided it was safer to sound like everyone else.
The insight at the center of everything we do: your business is a human being. Treat it like one. Give it something to believe. Give it something to say. Give it the courage to say it. When that happens, the marketing takes care of itself.
"Don't Be Boring" isn't a slogan. It's the operating system.
Our Mission
"Don't Be Boring Agency makes businesses impossible to ignore."
Our Vision
To make "don't be boring" the standard every business holds itself to.
The Rule
"Be yourself while caring about someone else. That's never boring."
Built by someone who
got tired of boring.
Josh Rolph spent two decades in Washington and Sacramento making complicated things worth paying attention to. Congressional staffer. Lobbyist for California agriculture. Along the way, he built side businesses, wrote, and kept asking the same question: why does so much important work go unnoticed?
What those years taught him: boring content kills causes. A policy that deserves to win loses when no one can explain why it matters. An organization that does good work goes unnoticed because its messaging sounds like every other organization's messaging. Boring isn't safe. It's expensive.
He brought those skills of communicating big ideas, along with years of building businesses and writing on the side, to launching Don't Be Boring Agency on March 13, 2020. The first day of COVID. Not because the timing was ideal. Because the idea was right, and some ideas don't wait.
Josh is a musician (rock band Her Blood Blue Eyes), a writer, and a father of four. He believes the most interesting version of any business is hiding under its corporate copy, and finding it is the most valuable thing a marketing partner can do.
What we believe.
Be Real
No buzzwords. No vague promises. We tell you what's working and what's costing you clients.
Chase the Energy
We go where the momentum is. The best marketing ideas are the ones people respond to.
Connect
Marketing that doesn't create real connection between a business and its customers is just noise.
Celebrate Uniqueness
Every business has something interesting about it. Finding that thing and amplifying it is the job.
Art and Science
Great marketing is both. The data tells you what to do. The creative tells you how to do it memorably.
Grow
We're building something for ourselves and for every client. Growth is the standard, not the exception.
